Associate Director of Development

Chicago Opera Theater's (COT) Associate Director of Development reports to the Director of Development. He/she will be responsible for the management, administration and solicitation of foundation, government and corporate giving (both unrestricted and restricted); oversee gift entry into the Tessitura database and create reports accordingly; participate in the planning and execution of the annual gala and other special events, including receptions during production.

The Associate Director of Development also acts in coordination with the Director of Development to advance ongoing campaigns and to assist in the implementation of new campaigns to secure funds and to raise community awareness of COT. The current year expectations of this office are to raise or facilitate more than $2 million in annual support for COT and its programs.

Duties
  • Researches prospective grants from foundations, corporations and government agencies
  • Develops relationships with foundation, corporation and government funders
  • Coordinates and maintains grant calendar
  • Writes government, foundation and corporate giving proposals and final reports
  • Oversees the processing of all foundation, government and corporate gifts and gift acknowledgements
  • Maintains all foundation, corporation and government files
  • Handles communication with foundation, corporation and government funders
  • Supports the Director of Development in all aspects of fundraising including Planned Giving and other individual giving campaigns, annual gala and all other special events
  • Oversees and generates work for one Development Assistant as well as interns
  • Other duties as needed
Education/Experience/Skills
A college degree is required, plus three to five years of development experience. Strong communication skills are imperative, as are interpersonal and organizational skills. The candidate must have the ability and confidence to work without close supervision, to foresee Development needs and to work proactively.

The candidate will have an appreciation for performing arts (classical music and/or opera in particular), be knowledgeable about a wide variety of performing arts programs and be familiar with a broad base of donors and funding prospects. Professional and cordial demeanor, tact and diplomacy are imperative as the incumbent is regularly in contact with high level donors and prospects, COT’s Board of Directors, business leaders, volunteers, COT leadership and personnel.

Experience with Tessitura, understanding of databases and thorough knowledge of MS Office is essential. Out-of-season office hours are normally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. In-season (March through May) hours are flexible, including some evenings and weekends.
