Milwaukee Shakespeare invites applications for the position of Managing Director.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director manages the company's vision and represents the company to the audience and the larger community. He/she will assume leadership of the day-to-day administrative operations of the company, overseeing the company budget and the strategic plan; and in partnership with Artistic Director Paula Suozzi, the raising of the revenues necessary to assure a sound financial base.

Founded in 2000, Milwaukee Shakespeare is the area's only professional theater company devoted exclusively to classical works. Its mission is to create theater experiences of uncompromising artistry that tell the stories of William Shakespeare with clarity and innovation. The vision of the company is to create a Midwestern home for artists and audiences to share and celebrate great Shakespearean work.

The 2008-2009 season will include productions of Love's Labour's Lost, Henry V and Othello, along with an array of outreach and educational activities. The annual budget is approximately $1.4 million.

Major areas of responsibility for the Managing Director include developing annual budgets; preparing the long-range plan; fostering a supportive workplace; recruiting and supervising personnel; income generation; negotiating season-long contracts with Actors' Equity, venues, etc.; and representing the theater as an ambassador and advocate in the community.

Personnel reporting to the Managing Director include the Marketing Director, Development Director, Company Manager and Bookkeeper, along with outsourced services such as payroll.

The successful candidate will have experience in the areas of strategic planning, financial management and staff/board development, and have a proven track record in seeking earned and contributed revenues (including subscriptions, corporate sponsorship, government and foundation grants, individual contributions and special events).

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with at least five years' experience in not-for-profit cultural management, preferably theater; excellent analytical, financial communications and organizational skills; a knowledge of theatrical production and classical repertoire; as well as a track record in responsible fiscal stewardship, good board relations and fundraising. Political savvy and the ability to deal humanely with a broad spectrum of personalities would also be essential characteristics.

A love of Shakespeare would be important; training in not-for-profit management or arts administration would be helpful.
