Chief Artistic/Executive Officer

As the chief architect of The Canadian Stage Company’s vision and artistic profile, the successful candidate will occupy the unique and highly visible leadership position of the organization. The ideal candidate will be able to articulate a clear, distinctive, imaginative and compelling artistic plan for the company’s future.

This position is currently titled "Artistic Producer" with a mandate to balance the artistic and management sides of the company as The Canadian Stage Company’s Chief Executive Officer. The position is responsible for artistic planning and overall management, including artistic production, fiscal stewardship, board and community relations, fundraising, education and artistic development. A strong network throughout the theater industry is vital.

The Canadian Stage Company is Canada’s largest contemporary not-for-profit theater (the third largest company in Canada), with an annual budget in excess of $9 Million.

Dedicated to developing and presenting landmark Canadian plays, as well as presenting international repertoire, the company performs in four distinct venues: the 876-seat Bluma Appel Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, the Berkeley Street facility with the 246-seat Downstairs and 167-seat Upstairs Theatres, and the 1,100-seat outdoor High Park amphitheater. The company currently employs 36 full-time staff, 20 part-time staff, and over 200 artists each season, serving an annual audience of over 150,000. A 35-member Board of Directors governs the organization.

The Canadian Stage Company has recently renewed its commitment to developing and presenting contemporary theater and recognizes that increasing and diversifying its audiences and ensuring the highest level of artistic excellence are critical to its future success. The company believes strongly in collaboration with artists and other theater organizations to bring Canadian voices and stories to its audiences.

The Search Committee seeks a leader who will build on the solid achievements of Canadian Stage Company. The new leader must bring to the role:
  1. A strong record of artistic achievement in theater;
  2. Experience working in highly complex operations with a responsibility for both excellence in artistic production and financial results;
  3. A range of experience that demonstrates a proactive and creative approach to engaging the artistic community;
  4. A high motivation to build and engage audiences for the company, combined with an informed perspective on audience trends and desires;
  5. The ability to build effective working relationships with artists, theater industry colleagues, donors, board members, community leaders and funding agencies;
  6. A leadership approach that will create a positive, mutually-supportive working relationship between the artistic and administrative sides of the company.
Toronto is a highly competitive market for theatrical activity, as well as the home of many other large, nationally and internationally recognized performing arts organizations such as The National Ballet of Canada, Canadian Opera Company and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, among many, many others. It is important that the new leader be able to define a unique position for the Canadian Stage Company in this vibrant cultural landscape.

The current senior management team consists of an executive producer/general manager and experienced directors of marketing, communications and sales, development, production and artistic/audience development. The current Artistic Producer is stepping down at the end of the 2008-2009 season after 17 years with the company.

Salary commensurate with experience. Interested candidates are invited to submit a letter of interest, resume and list of references in confidence to:
