Overview
Opera Boston is a fast-growing company producing original productions of adventurous repertory. Our operatic productions have won critical and popular acclaim and frequently sell out. We are looking for a highly-skilled, ambitious and energetic individual to join our team as Development Manager. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Development, the Development Manager’s main area of responsibility will be the management of the Annual Fund and special events as the main initiatives in Opera Boston’s Audience Stewardship program. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, communications, follow-through and social skills, and professional writing and editing skills.

Position Description
The Development Manager (DM) will work with the Director of Marketing and Development to improve the performance of the company and its resource development in five principal areas:
  • Annual Fund (40%)
    Create and manage a results-oriented annual fund program including the development of a multi-phased annual fund campaign. The DM will be accountable for achievement of annual fund goals and will report on progress regularly. The DM will manage the ongoing mechanics of the annual campaign including: developing and implementing strategies to meet annual and multi-year goals, identifying and cultivating new donors, soliciting gifts, developing new gift and donor acknowledgement deliverables, moves management and recognition procedures. The DM will also be the primary contact for delivery of benefits and recognition to Friends Circle ($100-$2499) members. Some major duties are as follows:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual campaign plan with measurable goals, project schedules and budgets
    • Organize and implement annual campaign events
    • Create mailings, design invitations and develop written communications
    • Collaborate with staff to identify opportunities that can enhance participation in the annual campaign
    • Prepare reports to keep senior management informed of annual campaign progress, and recommend actions to achieve goals
    • Respond to donor questions and inquiries, in person, in writing and by telephone
    • Identify and recommend donors to the major gifts program who have come via the annual campaign
    • Assist in special campaign efforts as assigned and support overall departmental fundraising projects
  • Events and Special Projects (20%)
    The DM will be responsible for the scheduling, planning and execution of board, overseer and donor events, and will coordinate his or her activities closely with the Annual Gala Event Manager in order to ensure a successful outcome, as well as assisting in special campaign efforts as assigned and supporting overall departmental fundraising projects.
  • Grants (10%)
    The DM will assist the Director of Marketing and Development, other senior management and a freelance grantwriter to identify prospects, to write and submit grants and to provide complete and timely reports to granting foundations.
  • Sponsorships (20%)
    The DM will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Development, as well as the Marketing Manager, to identify sponsorship properties, value and package them, identify and approach prospects and deliver sponsorship benefits.
  • Volunteers (10%)
    The DM will be the primary contact for volunteers and will work to increase the engagement of constituents with an eye toward building a strong community of volunteers to assist in all aspects of the company’s activities. Specific areas of focus are:
    • To create volunteer opportunities for annual donors to become more deeply engaged with Opera Boston’s activities
    • To assist in selecting and recruiting volunteers and provides them with leadership, training, direction and ongoing support
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent knowledge or experience
  • Three-plus years experience within nonprofit fundraising or related business or professional field
  • Experience with direct mail, telefunding and donor recognition programs for nonprofit organizations or equivalent is desirable
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Office and proficiency with Raiser’s Edge software
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage and execute projects in a timely manner and meet goals and deadlines
  • Ability to provide timely, accurate and clear status reports
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks
  • A self-starter with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively and independently
  • Interest in the arts, especially opera, is helpful
