The University of North Carolina School of the Arts seeks an experienced leader to serve as Dean of the School of Music. The preferred starting date is July 1, 2009. The Dean is the top administrator in the School of Music and reports to the Chancellor. He or she provides artistic, academic and managerial leadership to the School of Music faculty, students and staff.

UNCSA is one of the 16 campuses of the UNC system and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Of the more than 1,100 students who enroll each year in graduate, undergraduate and high school programs, 270 major in music. The Dean of Music upholds a tradition of artistic excellence and educational innovation that has characterized UNCSA since its inception in 1965. Building on the vision of UNCSA’s founding President, Vittorio Giannini, the School of Music fosters an environment where professional and aspiring musicians come together in a conservatory setting. At UNCSA, musicians, dancers, actors, filmmakers, visual artists, designers and academicians form a creative and collaborative community.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of School of Music operations and development.
  • Spearhead fundraising for the School of Music.
  • Manage hiring, enrollment, curriculum and accreditation.
  • Administer the School of Music annual budget of approximately $3.8 million.
  • Represent the School of Music to the UNCSA senior administration and to other UNCSA constituencies.
  • Expand the school’s reputation nationally and internationally.
  • Facilitate the functioning and evolution of School of Music programs.
Qualifications
  • Exemplary record as a leader, administrator, fundraiser and manager
  • History of collaborative leadership
  • Excellence in oral and written communications
  • High-level accomplishment in the music profession
  • Proven ability as a music educator
  • Understanding of current developments in the music profession and in higher education
  • Facility with administrative and educational technology
The search committee will begin reviewing applications after December 5, 2008 and continue until the position is filled.
