Public Relations Coordinator

General Duties: Wichita Grand Opera, a dynamic, young, and fast growing company, seeks a Public Relations Coordinator (PRC). Under the direct supervision and guidance of the General Director, the PRC coordinates, implements, and administers all aspects of the Public Relations Department.

Specific Duties:
  • Assist the General Director with the strategic planning and execution of the season’s public relations campaign.
  • Prepare annual Public Relations Budgets and Monthly Cash Flow Projections to be approved by GD; and monitor and report monthly actual expenses over/under budget.
  • Responsible for Patron Services; Market Research Projects; and Audience Development through generating new and repeat individual, subscription, and group ticket sales, with a targeted ticket sales income of $450,000 for the 2019-2011 season.
  • Work in tandem with the Box Office Manager to maintain, update, and improve electronic files and hard copy files for the Public Relations Department.
  • Preparation, implementation, placement, and budgeting of: website e-commerce; newsletters; email blasts; etc.
  • Write and distribute press releases and other public relations materials that profile the performances and artists, and promote ticket sales.
  • Work to create and implement new ideas for promoting the company to new markets, and creating goodwill relationships between local entities and the company in coordination with Marketing Manager.
  • Assist with special events, fundraisers, and pre-performance ticket sales
  • Assist with the selling, organizing, and collecting of program journal ads
  • Responsible for coordinating the production of the program journal.
  • Monitor website marketing results, accuracy, and user friendly elements.
  • Create and continually update mailing lists and e-mailing lists
  • Other duties as assigned by the General and Artistic Directors

Ideal Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • A minimum of three-years professional experience in ticket sales, advertising, and public relations, with a proven track record in a performing arts organization, but preferably an opera company
  • General knowledge of one or more graphic arts design programs preferable
  • General knowledge and interest in opera repertoire and artists, Self-motivated, strong interpersonal skills, excellent organizational ability, superior verbal and written communication skills, and detail oriented.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, computerized ticket sales, website maintenance, other computer programs, and the internet.

Start Date and Salary: This full-time position is available immediately, and the salary is commensurate with experience including benefits. Wichita Grand Opera is the only professional opera company in Kansas, and the work environment is creative and fast-paced. From Airport:
The easiest way to reach the OPERA America offices is to get a cab at the airport. Cost is $40-45
(not including tip).
  • JFK - Take the AirTrain ($5 - approx. 15 minutes) to the Jamaica Street Station and transfer to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Take the LIRR to Penn Station ($12 - approx. 35 minutes). See Penn Station directions below.
  • LaGuardia - Take the M60 Bus to the Hoyt Ave/31st Street. Get on the or Train and take that to 42nd/Times Square Station. Follow the Times Square Station directions below.
  • Newark - Take the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station ($15 - approx. 45 min). See the Penn Station Directions below.

From Penn Station/Madison Square Garden:
Leave the station through the 7th Avenue/33rd Street exit and walk south for four blocks. The building is on
the right hand side.

From Grand Central Station:
Take the Train to the 42nd/Times Square station and transfer to the Train.
Take the Train to the 28th Street stop and walk north on 7th Avenue.
The building is on the same block as the train stop.

From 42nd Street/Times Square:
Take the Train to the 28th Street stop and walk north on 7th Avenue.
