melaniemcgaha: This is #operaweek…. why I love opera…its art in words and motion!

Nedda Casei: [NEA Opera Honors 2011 recipient] Risë Stevens was one of the most unique artists I had the pleasure of hearing in my youth, and the person who most inspired me to make an operatic career. I will never forget her Orfeo when she touched the hand of Euridice returning from death, forbidden to look at her. It was one of the most electric moments on the theatrical stage. Not to mention her unforgettable Carmen, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier that had me wishing I could meet a young man like that, her beautiful Dalila, her many inspirational performances. Later the joy of working with her on her development and encouragement of young artists. She lived an incredibly giving life on every level. I write this love letter with a heart full of the recognition of what she has given as an American artist and leader of the American music world.
