MUSIC! WORDS! OPERA! Training Workshops
OPERA America, in partnership with local opera companies across the country, provides training workshops for the MUSIC! WORDS! OPERA! curriculum. Workshops are held every summer and are typically one week long. Workshop leaders are experts in using the curriculum and adapting it for different needs. Many of our trainers started out using the program in their classrooms as teachers, and some actually helped create the curriculum. During the workshop, teachers go through the same process that they will undertake with their students. They learn about opera through the study of a great work and then apply that knowledge to create an original performance. In addition, the workshop highlights ways that teachers can relate opera to other subjects, paying particular attention to the subject area standards. There is also a strong focus on assessment and evaluation.
