M!W!O! — Parents & Students

Studies have shown that having parental support for education is valuable for both teachers and students. Information about this can be found on the following page on the Web site of the National Education Association (NEA): There are several ways to support your child’s involvement in M!W!O!

Volunteer
The best way to find out how you can support your child is to contact his or her teacher and ask how you can help. Chances are, there are a number of different tasks with which the teacher would appreciate your help. Parents can help create costumes, build scenery or serve as classroom helpers while the students are working on creating their original opera. Parents can also help create a memorable performance for their students by serving as ushers, or helping create a concession stand on performance night. If you have a background in music or theater, you can also assist the students with composing or staging their opera. If you are unable to volunteer your time, simply helping your child rehearse as he or she prepares for the performance, and attending the production are wonderful ways to show your support.

Help your child learn more
If your child is interested in learning more about opera, visit our resources page, where you will find recommendations of books, CDs, videos and Web sites designed to facilitate your child’s learning.

Serve as an arts advocate

From Airport:
The easiest way to reach the OPERA America offices is to get a cab at the airport. Cost is $40-45
(not including tip).
  • JFK - Take the AirTrain ($5 - approx. 15 minutes) to the Jamaica Street Station and transfer to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Take the LIRR to Penn Station ($12 - approx. 35 minutes). See Penn Station directions below.
  • LaGuardia - Take the M60 Bus to the Hoyt Ave/31st Street. Get on the or Train and take that to 42nd/Times Square Station. Follow the Times Square Station directions below.
  • Newark - Take the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station ($15 - approx. 45 min). See the Penn Station Directions below.

From Penn Station/Madison Square Garden:
Leave the station through the 7th Avenue/33rd Street exit and walk south for four blocks. The building is on
the right hand side.

From Grand Central Station:
Take the Train to the 42nd/Times Square station and transfer to the Train.
Take the Train to the 28th Street stop and walk north on 7th Avenue.
The building is on the same block as the train stop.

From 42nd Street/Times Square:
Take the Train to the 28th Street stop and walk north on 7th Avenue.
The building is on the same block as the train stop.
