OPERA America's San Francisco Bay Initiative

Sponsored by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

OPERA America has launched the San Francisco Bay Initiative, an ambitious series of multifaceted programs meant to build capacity for the creation, presentation, and enjoyment of opera in Northen California. The San Francisco Bay area's vibrant opera community, anchored by San Francisco Opera, is home to a number of smaller opera companies, several educational institutions that train singers, a strong cadre of emerging artists (including composers, librettists, singers), and technical/production personnel, making it an ideal location for OPERA America's varied programs.

The Initiative, made possible through generous support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, will allow OPERA America to present core programs and develop new events to meet the needs of different constituent groups.

Over a three-year period, OPERA America will offer workshops and seminars for trustees, composers and librettists, singers, technical/production personnel, and educators. In addition, OPERA America will conduct personalized consultations with smaller companies, in which field experts will work with opera company staff to tackle such issues as board development and strategic planning.

Extending Core Services

As part of its continuing service to the field of opera, OPERA America has developed a number of programs and services that can be implemented at the local level. Through the San Francisco Bay Initiative , OPERA America plans to bring two of its core programs to the Bay area, working with members of the local community to further refine the programs and to ensure that they meet the needs of the Bay area audience.

Developing New Programming

The San Francisco Bay Initiative also provides OPERA America with an opportunity to develop and pilot several new programs. In this way, the programs of the Initiative will potentially serve as a foundation for new programming for several OPERA America constituencies.

Looking Towards the Future

OPERA America plans to evaluate the impact of the San Francisco Bay Initiative through a number of different mechanisms including conference calls and surveys. Feedback about the three new programs that will be piloted in San Francisco will be especially valuable as OPERA America refines these programs and adds them to its core services. OPERA America will also examine the impact that the programming has had on the Bay area opera community as a whole, to see if the initial goals of strengthening and revitalizing that community have been achieved.

OPERA America feels the San Francisco Bay Initiative and its assessment will yield valuable knowledge and experience, allowing for the replication of similar programming series in other communities
