We live in a truly exciting time. More arts organizations than ever are using Web 2.0 technologies, including open source software, to engage and develop their audiences and employees. Diana Hossack aptly chronicled this excitement in her February 2008 ArtistLink feature.

In keeping with this global trend, OPERA America has in recent months sought more than ever to enrich the member experience on operaamerica.org. This season, for the first time, OPERA America offers podcasts from the Making Connections series for download. The sessions, professional development and networking events in New York City, are available by visiting the Making Connections Archive. The first two sessions of the 2008-2009 season, "Finding Artist Mentors" and "Crossing From Theater Directing to Opera," are available now.

Live Making Connections sessions in the OPERA America office will continue on October 16 with "Fine-tuning Your Networking Skills." "Workshopping Your Opera" and "Performing in Your Community" will follow on October 28 and 29, respectively. Visit the Making Connections Web page to view the season line-up or register for these sessions. If you are outside of the New York metropolitan area, check back later for the podcasts.

Also available online is a podcast from OPERA America's most recent Workshop for Singers in San Francisco. The session, "Performing an Effective Audition," features Clifford (Kip) Cranna, San Francisco Opera (moderator); Sheri Greenawald, San Francisco Opera; Peter Kazaras, Seattle Opera; Jay Lesenger, Chautauqua Opera; Bill Palant, IMG Artists; and Timm Rolek, Sacramento Opera. The recording is available for download here. In addition to these new podcasts, the OPERA America Web site also includes a number of useful, comprehensive features for opera artists, producers and audiences:
  • Opera Source
A career resource for all opera professionals. This searchable database contains the most recent information available on auditions and other mainstage, training, educational, management and competition opportunities from a vast range of organizations.
  • Online Learning
These online courses offer an opportunity to explore the many dimensions of opera — literature, music, visual art — as well as learn more about the artists who make a night at the opera truly unforgettable. The four-week courses cover topics such as the world of the composer, the opera's source materials and music analysis. An interactive bulletin board feature allows discussion between participants and the instructor.
  • Schedule of Performances
A searchable database of member companies' performances from 1991 to the current season, which contains performance dates, locations, production teams and performers. This tool contains data provided by OPERA America's producing member organizations. Schedule of Performances was created not only as an archive, but also for the use of potential ticket buyers in the general public, major media and funders, researchers, arts administrators and colleagues.
  • Jobs in Opera
An up-to-date compendium of full-time job openings in the opera field. Member organizations may list their job openings here at no charge.
  • Cornerstones
Your source for information on the 20 most performed operas in North America. See your favorite operas in a new light, with background articles that explore musical and historical context, as well as recommendations for further reading, listening and viewing.
  • Membership Directory
Find OPERA America member companies in your area using this tool. Membership Directory listings also cross-reference organizations' Opera Source and Schedule of Performances listings.
  • Archived OPERA America Publications
Log in to the OPERA America Web site to view back issues of Opera America magazine; e-newsletters such as AdvocacyLink, EducationLink and TrusteeLink; all of our past Online Learning courses; and additional resources, such as Aria Talk and the Singer Self Inventory.
In addition to these features on the OPERA America Web site, another great way to stay connected to OPERA America is through our Facebook group. OPERA America members and non-members alike can join the group to stay abreast of our artistic programs and to receive invitations to Making Connections events, workshops and other opportunities for artists.

OPERA America's online resources grow more robust every day. So, whether you are looking for a job, want to download a professional development podcast or wish to learn more about an opera such as Nixon in C
