Position Description:
The Research Intern for Foundations, Government, and Corporate Relations will gain insight into the process of managing a grant portfolio for a mid-size opera company. The portfolio includes grants from private foundations, the US government, and corporations. The research intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist the Development Associate for Foundation Relations in the preparation of current grants and to provide support with researching and identifying new grant prospects to increase COT’s grant portfolio. The research intern will be able to take ownership of small grants that he/she can lead under supervision, from the research phase to the writing and submission phase.

COT is a fun, collaborative non-profit environment offering significant hands-on experience.

The position is located in Chicago

Time commitment: 10-20 hours a week, for a 3-month period.

The research intern reports to the Development Associate for Foundation Relations.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct prospect research on institutional (foundation, corporate and government) donors.
• Assist in the application and grant management process.
• Assist with maintenance of Tessitura donor database.
• Participate in weekly development staff meetings and Board committee meetings as appropriate.
• Attend special events — such as donor rooms or musical salons — and assist with donor cultivation.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in fundraising and arts management and be an energetic, hard-working individual with outstanding research, written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail. Must be able to prioritize tasks and manage multiple, time-sensitive projects simultaneously. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must.
