POSITION SUMMARY:
A senior member of the Atlanta Symphony’s Development Team, the Senior Director for Development works in support of the Vice President for Development, President, and Board of Directors and manages a talented staff of development professionals to maximize contributed revenues in support of the agency’s mission. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the long-term financial health and viability of the Orchestra.
This position oversees the Government and Foundation Relations, Volunteer Services and Development Services departments for the Orchestra. The Senior Director’s duties consist of the following: lead oversight of departmental goal projections/reporting and departmental budget; lead development communications, including but not limited to grant solicitations, reports, analytical documents; develops goals and strategies for Foundation and Government fundraising; oversight of volunteer and event-based fundraising; meets with institutional donors and prospective donors to create and foster relationships; utilizes traditional and innovative methods in order to exceed goals; creates a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization; leads the solicitation and acknowledgement of donations, ensuring the reporting, forecasting and accuracy of donor records; creates or approves messaging regarding the organization and its programs.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm with evenings and weekends as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Orchestrates Development Messaging and Performance Reporting:
•
Develops high level and detailed messaging – qualitative and quantitative – that communicates the organization’s mission, focus areas, goals, performance and benefits.
•
Leads the creation of communication vehicles, reports, analytical documents and other instruments that directly support the goal of funding the Orchestra; oversees the Development department budgets, finances and reporting.
•
Responsible for annual creation and update of Development “Grant Master” messages and documents.
•
Accurately completes and communicates the monthly and quarterly performance reports and forecasts.
2. Leads Institutional Cultivation and Relations Activities:
•
Develops grant and funding proposals that secure support from major
philanthropic organizations and government arts agencies.
•
Responsible for Sponsorship goals being exceeded annually.
•
Successfully completes on schedule all necessary foundations and government reports.
3. Leads Volunteer and Event-Based Fundraising Activities:
•
Develops and implements strategies to achieve the Orchestra’s annual fundraising plans to support goals and budgets in support of the development agenda.
•
Responsible for building relationships and soliciting donations from interested individual groups and organizations in the community.
•
Responsible for ensuring revenue goals are achieved and/or exceeded annually. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has a goal of receiving approximately 50% of its revenues from donor contributions.
•
Ensures that events and volunteer activities meet or exceed contributed revenue and margin goals annually.
4. Recruits, Develops and Grows Talent for the ASO:
•
Recruits, trains and ensures that Development personnel prospect for new donors or opportunities to increase donations from existing donors.
•
Leads a team of staff, volunteers, and musicians to achieve substantial increased annual and major giving goals.
•
Increases participation in fundraising efforts from volunteer leadership.
5. Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Senior Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of the Government and Foundation Relations, Volunteer Services and Development Services departments.
•
Ensures contributed revenue goals are exceeded annually in each giving area.
•
Strategizes with Development personnel on creating and implementing annual work plans and ensures work plans are on target to exceed every goal.
•
Provides leadership, mentoring and training to Development Directors, Managers and Coordinators, and fosters an environment of successful team work, and cross-assignment collaboration, and ensures that each director is performing at the most effective and efficient level.
•
Ensures the accuracy and reliability of donor records and reporting.
•
Makes certain that ongoing donor prospecting and cultivation is occurring and successful.
6. Additional Responsibilities include:
•
Participates in, organizes and supports key Orchestra activities including but not limited to volunteer events, concerts, promotion and cultivation activities.
•
Maintains and reports performance metrics towards goals.
SPECIFIC CONDITIONS of WORK
This is a full-time, exempt position that requires frequent interaction with volunteers and donors outside of standard office hours. While changing conditions may alter the amount of time spent on any area, the time spent on the position responsibilities can be expected to be as follows:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
•
Bachelor's degree required, master’s degree preferred.
•
Minimum of 7-10 years of successful managerial/leadership experience in fundraising or applicable roles (e.g., B2B marketing, sales, revenue management) with progressive growth of responsibilities.
•
Demonstrated track record of applicable achievements in:
o
Achieving increased revenue goals.
o
Revenue management.
o
Innovative strategizing for the growth of new revenue opportunities.
o
Increased revenue from high net-worth individuals.
o
Face-to-face customer/patron/donor meetings and relationship building.
