Compensation: Internships are unpaid. Arrangements for college credit can be made. Housing may be provided, but preference is given to interns with local housing arrangements.
Dates: June - mid-August (exact dates are negotiable)
Interns must provide their own transportation.
All internships require:
- an appreciation for the arts
- ability to work under pressure
- strong writing skills
- ability to multi-task
- strong computer skills
- ability to prioritize
- attention to detail
- ability to work as part of a diverse team (artists, donors, children, adults, community members, etc)
- valid driver’s license
While the specific responsibilities are detailed below, keep in mind that a company this size requires that everyone be willing to work together - many projects will involve several different departments. In addition to specific duties pertaining to each internship, interns are expected to perform general office work on a day to day basis – answering phones, photocopying, drafting emails, research, etc.
This internship provides the intern with a hands-on experience in arts education. The intern will work closely with the Education Committee helping to design education materials, help coordinate education programs (KidsFest, Opera Connects for Teachers, Student Dress Rehearsal), create and present a program based on La bohème for the children participating in Department of Parks and Recreation summer camps, help with database management, and record program statistics.
Arts Administration Intern
This internship provides an invaluable opportunity for any student interested in a career in arts administration, introducing the student to all aspects of the production and operation of an opera company. Responsibilities include coordinating Young Artist recitals and scenes programs, compiling ticket information, compiling information packets for artists, editing other materials related to classical programming, and general office duties.
This internship is particularly beneficial to students with a strong interest in press relations, marketing, and graphic design. Responsibilities include providing assistance on all marketing and PR related projects, press releases, artist files, archive management, website management, social media, proofing materials, and other projects as needed. As this internship will contain an element of graphic design, strong Photoshop skills are recommended.
This internship is a unique opportunity to experience the production side of Ash Lawn Opera Festival. As a Production Intern one moves among the various departments participating in the preparation and execution of producing our performance season. Because of the nature of this internship, the intern will, at different times, serve the needs of our various production departments (wardrobe, stage management, etc.). A background in technical theatre is beneficial, although not necessary.
Our summer 2013 season includes productions of La bohème and Carousel at the historic Paramount Theater. The season's cast includes five artists who have worked at The Metropolitan Opera, and other singers who have worked at Washington National Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, New York City Opera and other prestigious houses.
Charlottesville is located two hours south of Washington, D.C., and is the home of the University of Virginia and of Presidents Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.
