Vice President - DevelopmentMinnesota Opera • Full-Timehttp://www.mnopera.org/Minneapolis, MNConsidered one of America’s most exciting opera companies, with an emerging international reputation for new opera development, the Minnesota Opera provides a stimulating and supportive work environment that encourages professionals to excel in support of the organization’s Mission and Objectives
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Vice-President Development is the Minnesota Opera’s most senior development professional and is responsible for the planning and implementation of all Annual, Capital and Endowment Campaigns and the maximization of contributed revenue. Currently the organization administers a $6 million annual campaign, and is planning a comprehensive campaign to expand the endowment. An accomplished manager with an impressive campaign track record, the VP Development must inspire and manage a growing department of four Development professionals and partner with volunteer community leaders on the highest level of solicitation calls.
THE MINNESOTA OPERA:
The Minnesota Opera is one of North America’s most successful performing arts organizations. Under the leadership of President and General Director Kevin Ramach and Artistic Director Dale Johnson, the $10+ million dollar annual operation produces a wide range of operatic activity annually including the highly acclaimed main season of 5 productions in St. Paul’s 1900 seat Ordway Center, the commissioning of new works, recordings, educational programs, artist training programs, and other community service and outreach programs.
THE PROGRAM AND THE POSITION:
The Minnesota Opera administers a growing Development program with an annual expectation of unrestricted, temporarily restricted and permanently restricted contributions that exceeds $8 million. The VP Development reports directly to the President and is responsible for all contributed income. Directly supervising the efforts of Individual, Foundation, Special Event and Corporate Development efforts, the VP Development liaises and coordinates with the Directors of the Marketing and Communication and the Education Director, the other partners who manage the Minnesota Opera’s relationship with the community.
The majority of the VP Development’s time and focus is split between high level personal call cultivation and solicitation and the management of the Development effort. The implementation of a new major gifts program, the next step in the Department’s growth, will yield dramatic results, given the excellent administration of the annual gift program and should be a focus of the new VP. In addition, the VP Development is responsible for the overall strategy and plan of the organization’s move from an annual unrestricted focus to a comprehensive giving approach that will maximize all sources of contributed revenues: unrestricted, temporarily restricted, permanently restricted and Legacy gifts, through a comprehensive campaign which will also build the Minnesota Opera’s Endowment Fund by at least $40 Million by the year 2019.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
The VP Development must represent the most senior level of professional Development/advancement accomplishment with a specialization in major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. This individual is a respected manager/coach that stimulates others through example and Socratic leadership, and understands that the Development process facilitates the donor’s ability to achieve personal fulfillment through philanthropy. The Director must also be an expert Development planner/strategist capable of elevating the entire Minnesota Opera Development Department’s capabilities from one of the best performing arts Development programs in Minneapolis/St. Paul to one of the best Development programs in the United States.
An interest in, and passion for the performing arts in general
and the Minnesota Opera in particular are essential.
