Opera Grand Rapids in Grand Rapids, Michigan is seeking candidates for the full-time position of Executive Director.
Opera Grand Rapids is the longest-running professional opera company in the state of Michigan and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016. The company produces three productions per season, with two performances of each production. It has an annual operating budget of approximately $1,000,000 and a staff of seven (including the Executive Director and Artistic Director). Since 2010 Opera Grand Rapids has been headquartered at the Betty Van Andel Opera Center, a state-of-the-art, LEED-certified building located in the heart of Grand Rapids. The opera center is owned by the company and houses the organization's administrative offices and rehearsal facilities, as well as meeting and event space.
The company's Artistic Director, Robert Lyall, has been with Opera Grand Rapids since 1989. In addition to his role with Opera Grand Rapids, Maestro Lyall is the General and Artistic Director of the New Orleans Opera. The Artistic Director works directly under the Board of Trustees and is responsible for all facets of artistic production for the company, in collaboration with the Executive Director and subject to oversight by the Board of Trustees.
The Executive Director will work closely with the organization's Board of Trustees, board committees, and Artistic Director to accomplish the goals set by the Board of Trustees, with a special focus on revenue development and audience growth. The ED will be responsible for managing all aspects of the company's administrative operations including budgeting, funds development and donor relations, strategic planning, building and facilities management, and oversight of all staff (other than the Artistic Director and performers). The ED will serve as the organization's public advocate and spokesman for the purpose of promoting opera in greater Grand Rapids and surrounding communities.
We are looking for a candidate with not less than five years' experience in a senior leadership position at a performing arts organization, who has familiarity with opera and opera repertory, experience with issues surrounding performance production, and a proven ability to work well with donors and volunteer management. Demonstrable success with and enthusiasm for fundraising, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, facility in public speaking, strong leadership talent and organizational ability are all necessary attributes. Proven success in growing an arts organization is also a highly desirable qualification.
