Pittsburgh Opera, Inc., a Level II member of OPERA America and a constituent organization of the Pittsburgh
Cultural Trust, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Manager of Special Events and Corporate
. The Manager of Special Events and Corporate Relations reports directly to the Director of Development
and is an integral part of the opera company's five person development staff. This manager is responsible for
managing and advancing a portfolio that includes two large-scale special events, more than 50 corporate
relationships, and the activities of a volunteer organization with more than 100 individual members. The total value
of the activities in this portfolio is more than $1 million.
Job responsibilities of the Manager of Special Events:
- Special Events: Plan, produce and execute two major gala dinners at the beginning and end of each opera
season, including working with volunteer chairs/committee members; selling sponsorships, tables and
tickets; securing auction items/auctioneer/entertainment; expanding prospect lists and mining database for
new contacts; managing the design and production of event collateral for direct-mail, email and web
iterations; acknowledging all gifts, purchases and contributions and recording all income and expenses.
Plan and execute smaller fundraising events, including benefit concerts and corporate partner events, from
concept through day of event through acknowledgement of hosts and gifts. These events contribute
approximately $700,000 to the company's bottom line.
- Corporate Relations: Support the Director of Development in planning and executing a corporate
fundraising program that includes sustaining existing relationships through timely and appropriate
solicitations; researching, identifying, cultivating and soliciting new/lapsed relationships with businesses;
and creating a stewardship program that provides exceptional customer service to corporate donors by
providing appropriate benefits and timely reporting to donors.
- Friends of Pittsburgh Opera: The Manager of Special Events and Corporate Relations will support the
affairs and activities of Pittsburgh Opera's newest volunteer organization - the Friends of Pittsburgh
Opera. Responsibilities include working with volunteer event chairs to plan and execute three to four
smaller events each year, which contribute a total of $25,000 to the company's bottom line, and increasing
membership in the organization.
The ideal candidate will have one to three years of experience in development and/or nonprofit
management and a record of increasing the ROI of corporate campaigns or special events. Experience managing
special events, fulfilling sponsorships, organizing successful auctions and running a corporate annual fund are
important to the position. Familiarity with opera/classical music is preferred, but not required. Superior written and
verbal communication, organization and time management skills are essential, as is the ability to manage multiple
tasks independently and to thrive in an open office environment.
The successful candidate should have experience with computer software for customer relationship management,
data analysis, proposal/presentation creation and project management. Tools used at Pittsburgh Opera include
Tessitura, T-Stats, Blackbaud ResearchPoint and Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Candidates
must be available to work frequent nights and weekends; be responsible, mature, and team-oriented; and have a
valid drivers' license. A personal vehicle is helpful, but not essential.
