Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) is a professional summer stock opera company located just outside Des Moines, Iowa. DMMO produces three operas in repertory presented in a proscenium-thrust theater. The Production Department is comprised of 35 experienced designers and technicians from regional theaters, universities, and opera companies from around the United States working alongside 17 interns. Production work is done at the 500-seat recently updated theater and the new 5,750 square foot scene/paint shop.
DMMO is looking for approximately 26 theater technicians with professional experience or work in MFA program for the following departments for the 2014 summer season: Carpentry, Stage, Properties, Wardrobe, and Electrics. DMMO production staff crews are paid hourly, receive free housing and a travel stipend. Last year 22 different states were represented by the production staff.
For those in school looking for professional experience, the Des Moines Metro Opera Design and Production Internship is a training program for 17 students in the theater arts who wish to expand on their academic studies in the following departments: Stage, Properties, Wardrobe, Electrics, and Stage Management. The mission of the program is to provide design and production interns with a professional and learning environment to hone theatrical skill sets, gain valuable experiences, and expand the theatrical connections needed for a successful start in a career in the arts.
Interns receive a weekly stipend, a travel stipend to offset the cost of travel and are housed in single occupancy dormitory rooms with air conditioning. All tools and safety equipment are provided by the company. Last year the total number of interns in the program represented 13 different universities and colleges.
During the 9-week program interns will have:
- Worked on 6 technical rehearsals, 6 dress rehearsals, and 18 performances
- Participated in the build of 4 operas, working with several different crews
- Worked with the DMMO crew heads in skill-based workshops
- Participated in talk backs with directors, designers and DMMO staff
- Participated in classroom-based events including a Resume & Cover Letter Workshop and Portfolio Review
- Received an entrance and exit interview to track progress during the summer
