| Description: |
Linked by a brief love affair in their past, Count Nekhlyudov and the prostitute Maslova surprisingly rediscover each other at a trial, where Maslova is the accused and Nekhlyudov sits on the jury. Maslova's conviction leads to a physical journey+--+she in a prison car to Siberia, with Nekhlyudov following all the way to seek her forgiveness+--+but also to a spiritual and metaphorical one, through which new life springs in the hearts of both characters, though in surprisingly different ways as both are "resurrected" by the end. The opera's premiere marked the centenary of the publication of Tolstoy's novel.
