| Description: |
This work takes place in Havana, Cuba, in 1830. Cecilia, a beautiful mulatto, is in love with Leonardo Gamboa, a rich young Spaniard, son of Candido Gamboa. Cecilia is intrigued by a resemblance between herself and Leonardo. Opposing his son's love affair with Cecilia, Candido orders Leonardo to marry a rich Spanish girl. (It transpires that Cecilia is the illegitimate daughter of Candido). Cecilia implores Pimiento, a young black musician in love with her, to kill Leonardo's bride after the wedding ceremony. However, during a violent quarrel with Leonardo, Pimiento kills him instead of the bride. Cecilia loses her mind and spends the rest of her days in a psychiatric hospital dreaming of a perfect love with Leonardo, who comes to her in a vision.
