Description: In 1886, Chinese workers were hired to build the final and most treacherous stage of the Canadian Pacific Railway. A Chinese bookman and his daughter come to North America to make their fortune. Their lives and dreams intersect with those of Nichol, the project's foreman, whose lifelong ambition has been the union of Canada by a national railway.

As the characters grapple with love and violent death, they discover that they are defined by their culture and their circumstance.
