Georg Kaiser's masterpiece of German Expressionist theater tells of a day in the life of a lowly cashier when his world falls apart. A snap decision to rob the bank where he works in a misguided attempt to help a beautiful customer leads the cashier to abandon his home and family and flee with the money. Plagued with guilt and fearful of capture, he wanders the city, where everyone is on the make and money can't buy happiness. Finally, a young girl encourages him to attend the Salvation Army meeting and find forgiveness by confessing his guilt. The cashier gives away the money, but instead of bringing redemption, the girl betrays him to the authorities.
