| Description: |
Apollo offers Cassandra the gift of prophecy in exchange for sexual favors, but she is so overwhelmed by the images of bloodshed and destruction that she refuses his further advances and asks that he take back his gift. Infuriated, he curses her—although she will be able to fortell the future, no one will believe her. The rest of the opera follows the catastrophic consequences of her decision through the downfall of Troy, Cassandra's capture by Agamemnon, and her eventual death at the hands of Agamemnon's wife, Clytemnestra.
