Leaving Limbo, Dante and Virgil enter the Second Circle of Hell. They confront Minos, the demonic judge. After a brief altercation, they pass entering a dark space holding the Lustful. Those eternally tossed about by storms include Dido, Helen, and Cleopatra. Intrigued by one embracing couple, Dante calls to Francesca and Paolo. Recounting their love affair and death, Francesca cunningly manipulates their story to show they don't belong in Hell. Seduced by Francesca's story and overcome with pity, Dante faints.
