A bootblack, Dick Hunter,by a combination of determination, talent, hard work, application and some luck rises from the streets to a job as office boy, finds a second job, has conflict with a criminal stepfather, rises to the challenge, and is on his way "from rags to riches" at final curtain. Set in l876 New York, this is a musical in the tradition of ANNIE and OLIVER.
A reading of a revised version was seen in 1998 at Off Broadway's York Theatre Company. In 2001 Shine! was part of the National Musical Theatre Networkshowcase. That performance was recorded and released by Original Cast Recordsin October 2001. First prize with National Music Theatre Network, of 150 submissions. Very well received in its initial readings and recording.
