COMPOSER
Mary Ellen Childs Mary Ellen Childs composes concert work, often with a strong visual element, for a variety of ensembles, including solo accordion, string quartets, chamber groups and vocal works. The creator of many multi-media works, Childs is well known for her “visual percussion” pieces for her percussion group CRASH, in which she incorporates the movements of the bodies of the performers. Childs has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Kitchen, Other Minds, Chamber Music America, OPERA America and the Walker Art Center, among others. She has received fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, the Bush Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her opera Propeller, about the human urge to fly, was supported by grants from OPERA America and the MAP Fund. CDs of her work include Kilter (XI label), Dream House (innova), Wreck (innova) and Chamberhouse, a remix of Dream House. She was named a United States Friends Fellow in 2011.

Audrey Babcock A fresh and vibrant interpreter of Carmen, Audrey Babcock has performed the role with Nashville Opera, San Antonio Opera, Toledo Opera, Utah Festival Opera and Intermountain Opera, and this season with Florentine Opera. This season also sees her return to Syracuse Opera as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Most recently, she sang Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Tulsa Opera and Erika in Vanessa with Sarasota Opera. Other highlights include Jo ( Little Women), Maddalena ( Rigoletto), Aldonza/Dulcinea ( Man of La Mancha), Dorabella ( Così fan tutte) and Secretary ( The Consul).
