About the Metropolitan Opera Guild

The Metropolitan Opera Guild is a premier arts education organization dedicated to enriching people's lives through the magic and artistry of opera. The Guild fosters collaboration, literacy skills, and self-confidence in children with customized education programs integrated into the curriculum of their schools, and builds a deeper appreciation of opera in adults through workshops, community programs, and by publishing OPERA NEWS, the world's leading opera magazine. Summary Position Description

Reports to: Director of Development and Managing Director

 

Reporting jointly to the Director of Development and the Guild's Managing Director, the Development Manager / Board Liaison assists with the planning and management of the Guild's two large special events, the OPERA NEWS Awards and the Annual Luncheon, and serves as a direct liaison with the Guild's Board of Directors. The position will also perform other development functions as assigned.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Invite artists to events, and coordinate attendance with artist management and Guild staff;
  • Manage annual Luncheon Journal advertising sales, by: researching ad opportunities; selling and working with Board Members on selling ads; receiving creative and working with freelance designer on tribute ads; uploading final ads for journal printer;
  • Edit programs for special events and coordinate the printing;
  • Coordinate receptions for special events;
  • Manage the silent auction for the OPERA NEWS Awards by soliciting auction lots and working with Board members to bring in lots;
  • Work with staff on event seating;
  • Develop board meeting agendas in close consultation with senior staff and Board;
  • Attend most board and committee meetings. Gather, prepare, edit and distribute board meeting materials. Send meeting reminders and track attendance at meetings. Write and facilitate the editing of Board meeting minutes. Confirm room reservations as needed.
  • Coordinate, participate and assist in Board special events and fundraisers;
  • Maintain all details relating to the Board of Directors, including calendar, contact information, biographies, bylaws, meeting materials, minutes and terms of service;
  • Maintain updated information about the Board of Directors in Tessitura; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years fundraising, sponsorship and/or event planning experience, ideally within the arts sector;
  • Superb time management and organizational skills, including outstanding initiative and follow up skills;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • Exceptional computer skills with high level of comfort working in Microsoft Office;
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality of information;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and approach problems creatively;
  • Determination and ability to power through challenges; and
  • A four-year college degree.
