OPERA NAPLES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Opera Naples survived Hurricane Irma and the Southwest Florida region is reopening for business. Our Wang Opera Center came through the hurricane undamaged and along with preparations for the upcoming season, we're now actively renewing our search for Executive Director!

Background:

Opera Naples is a professional opera company founded in 2005 in the small but affluent community of Naples on the Gulf coast of Southwest Florida. Its location on the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, its abundant sunshine, numerous golf courses and upscale restaurants, museums, art galleries and shopping have established Naples as a sophisticated resort town. The area has about 350,000 inhabitants, is one of the wealthiest communities in the country with the highest concentration of millionaires per capita. During the October to April winter months, referred to as “the season,” the population triples with the arrival of wealthy part-time residents and tourists from all over the world.

Opera Naples is most active during this period. Typically during season, the company will stage two grand operas, chamber operas, recitals, and master classes. Each year, it manages an extensive outreach program into area schools, assembles and showcases a youth chorus, and stages an adolescent operetta production.

The company is small and relatively young, yet under the baton and leadership of Artistic Director Maestro Ramón Tebar, it has established an enviable record for presenting stellar productions featuring international artists of the caliber of Gregory Kunde, Angela Meade, and John Osborne.

The David and Cecile Wang Opera Center:

The company is a member of Opera America and is now located at the David and Cecile Wang Opera Center, which opened in 2014. It houses a 264-seat black box theater (with planned additions, soon to be 312), administrative offices, classrooms used for outreach programs and rehearsals, and prop, set and costume storage areas.

Under the auspices of Opera Naples, chamber opera, concerts and recitals are performed at the Center, including the Beaux Arts Chamber Music Series (Artistic Directors Tao Lin and Catherine Lan), an annual series featuring such ensembles as the Grammy-winning Shanghai Chamber quartet, the Aspen String Trio and the Ying Chamber Quartet.

Opera Naples’ large-scale productions are staged at the 1,425–seat Hayes Hall at Artis-Naples (formerly known as the Philharmonic Center for the Performing Arts); in the Pavilion on the lawns of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort; and at the Naples Botanical Garden.

Opera Naples is the home of the Renata Scotto Academy, which offers master classes to exceptional young professionals, conducted by one of the most celebrated performers of the modern era, the internationally acclaimed soprano, Emmy winner and former Met star, Renata Scotto. Although the program only began in the winter of 2017, first-year Academy graduates already report they have benefited from a significant boost in their careers. Ms. Scotto has agreed to offer more classes over an extended period in 2018. The first year’s program culminated in a public performance of solos and ensembles showcasing the young stars’ progress. This season’s second graduating class will perform in a full opera directed by Ms. Scotto.

Budget and Staff:

The company has an annual budget of $1.3M which it aims to grow to $1.7M over the next three years. Fundraising provides approximately 70% of the company’s revenue. The prosperity of the region and current economic climate offers great opportunity for growth in both contributed and earned income.

A Chairman and ten-person board currently manage the company’s strategic direction. The Chairman has temporarily assumed the position of Executive Director, overseeing all day-to-day operations.

Since 2014, the internationally renowned pianist and conductor, Maestro Ramón Tebar has been engaged as Artistic Director of Opera Naples, reporting to the board.

Maestro Tebar serves in a number of other posts in the U.S. and overseas. Here in the U.S., he became the first Spanish conductor to be appointed Music Director of an American opera company when, in 2011, he was named Music Director and Principal Conductor at Florida Grand Opera, a position he still holds today. He is also Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Palm Beach Symphony. Overseas, he is Principal Guest Conductor at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, and recently was appointed Artist Director and Chief Conductor of Valencia Symphony Orchestra.

At Opera Naples, a resident Associate Artistic Director, a Music Director/Education and Outreach Program Manager, a Production Manager/Technical Director, a Sales and Communications Manager, and an Office Manager support productions and operations under direction of the Executive Director in conjunction with the Artistic Director. Other skilled support, such as stage management, set and costume design, advertising and public relations, is outsourced as needed or provided by volunteer staff.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director is a full-time position, requiring residence in the Greater Naples area. The position reports to the Board of Directors, and works closely with the Artistic Director on business planning to build the company’s reputation for artistic excellence locally and nationally, while maintaining financial stability. The Executive Director will play a leadership role in achieving the company’s vision.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

Take overall responsibility for the five-year strategic plan; day-to-day operations and management of staff; financial oversight; internal and external communications; contracting coordination with other organizations. Oversee all marketing activities. Work closely with the Artistic Director to create future seasons and to develop and maintain the company’s calendar of activities including productions.

Institutional Development:

Responsibilities include maximizing contributed and earned revenue, cultivating partnerships with other organizations in the region, and ensuring efficient operation of program activities.

Preference will be given to candidates with fundraising expertise. Create and execute fundraising strategies and activities; meet or exceed fundraising targets; oversee donor database and donor communications; plan and coordinate grant submissions. Collaborate with the board and Artistic Director on planning and execution.

Audience Development:

Create strategies to cultivate new audience and performance opportunities. Work closely with the artistic team to manage educational activities. Expand relationships with area schools and colleges.

Maximize the Wang Opera Center:

Market the use by third parties of the John and Judy Hushon Theater at the Wang Opera Center to maximize its profit potential.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • It is essential that the successful candidate have substantial experience in fundraising and donor relations, audience development and organizational management; considerable knowledge of the opera business and opera repertoire; and excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Be a graduate with an appropriate degree from a nationally recognized institution.
  • Willing and able to become a respected champion in the local cultural community, a motivated standard-bearer, team builder and team player.
  • Comfortable and adept in both private and public social and business forums.
  • A skilled negotiator with a developed sense of tact and diplomacy.
