Technical Director - Aspen Opera Center 

The Technical Director works under the supervision of the Production Manager of the Aspen Opera Center overseeing the implementation and safety of scenic and electrical design elements for an eight week season consisting of two opera productions, weekly opera scenes master classes, and other scenic special projects for orchestral concerts as required. Responsibilities include directing and assisting in the construction and installation of all scenic elements, converting designer renderings into technical draftings in AutoCAD, assuring the safety of all scenic structures including creating a movement scheme if movement is necessary, and managing and assisting in loan in and scenic strike. This individual is also responsible for the approval of the electric plot and schematic based on power and line set availability in conjunction with the season’s Master Electrician, as well as all rigging needs over the eight-week season. This position requires attendance at stage rehearsals and note sessions to receive notes from the director and participate in real-time observations to advise on the feasibility of technical elements and supervise scenic “walk-throughs” to illustrate functions, safety precautions and hazards on stage. Finally, the Technical Director directly supervises the scenic construction team and assists stage management with run crew direction.

Requirements: BA/BFA in Technical Theater and a minimum of 3 years of related experience required.  Experience in the design, configuration, mechanics, and safety/quality assurance requirements of theater equipment and systems, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and knowledge of computers (Microsoft products) and information technology are essential. Experience with welding as well as extensive experience working with AutoCAD is a must. Candidates must have sensitivity to the needs of student performers and staff and a proven ability to work well with others. Candidates also must be independently motivated, possess a sense of humor, be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders comfortably. Additionally, candidates must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for the summer of 2018 is preferred. A DMV check will be conducted for the candidate hired.

Duration: June 4 - August 23, 2018 (approximately), plus a limited amount of remote pre-festival preparation work

Compensation: Weekly salary plus seasonal housing
