Reports to: Vice President, Artistic Operations

Supervises: Entire production department, including: Director of Design and Technology; Costume Director; Production Manager; Production Stage Manager; Staging Staff; Designers, Directors, Seasonal Production Staff

Important Staff Relationships: Artistic Administrator; Music Director; Chorus Master; VP Community Programs; New Works Administrator; Finance Dept.

Central Role: Assumes leading role in the Production Department through advancement, implementation and management of all aspects of Production, including planning, budget and finance tracking, personnel management, and production execution. Participates in the planning for future seasons.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise Production Staff Personnel
    • All to those listed above under “Supervises”
    • Manage hiring and supervision of staging staff, including Stage Managers, ASMs, Asst. Directors, Choreographers, and Fight Directors
    • Following identification by Artistic planning team, Vice President of Artistic Operations and yourself, contract and manage all show specific production team members, including designers (Sets, Costumes, Lights, Video) and specialty technicians
    • Identify, recruit, hire and manage, along with your applicable production staff, all festival production staff, including venue and costume coordinators, schedulers, PAs, and specialty needs (e.g. runner/driver)
    • Maintain positive union relationships with AGMA, AFM and IATSE and serve as primary AGMA liaison
    • Mentor, train, and coach production staff as necessary

       

  • Advance Production Operations
    • Work with Vice President of Artistic Operations, and department heads to create and track against budget for future seasons, creating reports as requested, and negotiating terms with major vendor partners
    • Supervise creation and maintenance of all production schedules; hold regular schedule meetings; implement important deadlines, especially those required by AGMA, AFM, and IATSE
    • Supervise preparation of production information sheets; maintaining updated sheets looking 3 years ahead
    • Supervise advance of all upcoming production needs, assembling all technical and non-technical show information, including permits, and disseminating as necessary
    • Supervise the research of rental production options
    • Supervise creation and implementation of co-production, rental and lease agreements
    • Coordinate effective communication among guest directors, designers, and all members of the production staff
    • Anticipate production specific needs as they impact AGMA CBA, including advance notifications and waiver requests
    • Organize and run advance production meetings
    • Supervise hiring of all Non-singing Performers, including supers and dancers

       

  • New Productions, Adaptations, and Rentals
    • Create and assure adherence to production deadlines for new productions
    • Work with designers, co-production partners, rental companies, and opera staff to develop and execute new production designs and/ or adapt existing productions, sets, props, projections and costumes
    • Manage feasibility determination and budgeting process following submission of designs
    • Manage construction of new productions or new production elements for existing productions, including outsourcing if appropriate

       

  • Rehearsal and Performance Supervision and Administration
    • Set and manage staff and performer hours and crew calls
    • Work with all production departments to ensure timely response to notes
    • Supervise all stage operations
    • Run production meetings during technical period
    • Ensure production standards during run of performances
    • Maintain standards of safety and response to safety, health and emergency concerns in compliance with Opera safety handbook

       

  • Facilities
    • Manage facility contracts, maintaining close relationships with facility vendors at the Opera set and costume shops
    • Work with shop supervisors to maintain facility upkeep as necessary

       

  • Interdepartmental Work
    • Participate in Special Events, including those for Development, Marketing and Community Programs
    • Make available production information as necessary

       

  • Other duties as assigned

  

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in performing arts or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • 5-7 years’ experience in opera production management
  • Knowledge of standard, contemporary, and chamber opera repertoire
  • Thorough knowledge of current practices, procedures, equipment and technologies in professional performing arts management; understanding of stage operations including installation and run of show
  • Computer literate in Office Windows
  • Ability to work in a team-based work environment
  • Ability to maintain several projects of equal priority at once and sustain productivity under pressure
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated leadership ability; superior team management and interpersonal skills; experience with union crews, operations analysis, resource, timeline, and budget management
  • Evening and weekend work required
