Arizona Opera is seeking an energetic and inspired Director of Marketing and Communications (Director) to join its senior management team as the company continues to pursue its vision of artistic vitality, delivery of civic value, audience expansion, and institutional strength and sustainability.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in marketing, advertising, branding, public relations, event coordination and ticket sales for the performing arts. The candidate will embrace the importance of a comprehensive approach to communications, which integrates sales and marketing, development, and community engagement, in broadening the organization’s reach with new audiences, as well as deepening relationships with current patrons.

S/he will understand the importance of working closely with other departments in a positive environment in support of the opera’s vision to serve the state of Arizona as fully as possible, and has a solutions-oriented approach to the challenge of revenue generation for the arts.

Experience with another non-profit professional performing arts organization is strongly preferred, with a heavy bias toward candidates that are experienced with and enjoy opera. Ability to operate with grace and humor in a high-intensity environment is a huge plus.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement successful marketing and communications plans and budgets to support the vision of Arizona Opera and its brand, including subscription and single ticket campaigns and public relations efforts

  • Track performance of sales and enhance tools to forecast future sales, with an eye to dynamically recalibrating campaigns as needed based on data to reach the highest possible ROI

  • Lead a department that currently consists of the Director, a marketing manager, and a marketing assistant (part-time), as well as external vendors and consultants, to achieve an earned revenue goal of approximately $2M annually

  • Partner with Box Office staff to ensure top-notch customer service and connection to messaging around productions, the season, and the brand

  • Work constructively and collaboratively with the fund development and outreach and education departments to develop and implement a company-wide communications approach that engages the community in a holistic fashion, mutually supporting Arizona Opera across its various initiatives.

  • Work strategically across departments to achieve organizational goals to 1) deepen and enhance current patron and donor experience to develop brand loyalty, and 2) identify and cultivate relationships with new patrons and donors for audience/donor development.

  • Oversee Arizona Opera’s website and seek opportunities to strengthen the company’s digital presence

  • Lead the timely creation of collateral and communications to support the above efforts and achieve defined revenue targets within a mutually agreed expense budget

  • Build and manage good relationships with media outlets, media sponsors, and others in the for-  and non-profit sectors

  • Conceptualize and launch new audience development initiatives to build audience, based on internal and external research and data

  • Lead creation of program material and other institutional/brand related communications

  • Manage all out of market and group sales initiatives

  • Oversee performance broadcast activities, in partnership with the Artistic

  • Oversee reporting of sales metrics, seeking opportunities to strengthen understanding of business performance through analysis of data and other research

  • Lead marketing and sales applications of Tessitura (CRM) and serve as liaison with other departments to maintain best practices in the CRM

  • Box Office staff reports to this position 


  • Understanding of how to build successful marketing campaigns across various media, including digital, broadcast, print

  • Three to five years of successful marketing experience, preferably in management/leadership positions in opera

  • Knowledge and enjoyment of opera strongly preferred

  • Ability to strategize, plan, prioritize and set timelines and metrics for success

  • An understanding of data and how it can be used to broaden and deepen relationships, as well as its value in developing and recalibrating strategy

  • Knowledge of Tessitura or other performing arts-oriented CRM strongly preferred

  • Proficient Microsoft Office including Word & Excel

  • Experience with budgeting, creating marketing plans and developing strategies

  • Understanding of excellent customer service and how to implement customer-centric engagement plans

  • Excellent writing, organizational, proofreading and communication skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required


Physical Demands:  

Extended periods at work station, using a keyboard, viewing a computer screen and communicating by telephone and in person. Special event set up and break down will be required at times.


Work Environment:

Work environment is generally quiet, and in an office setting, but intensifies during periods when the company is in production. Also, see Physical Demands section above re special events.


Travel/Other Requirements:

Reliable transportation is required and Director must be able to travel statewide. Attendance is expected at Arizona Opera performances in both Phoenix and Tucson. The season schedule requires working various nights and weekends to attend events, performances, rehearsals.
