Chief Artistic Officer

Minnesota Opera changes lives by bringing together artists, audiences, and community, advancing the art of opera for today and for future generations. The Chief Artistic Officer coordinates all artistic output of Minnesota Opera under the direction of the company’s President and General Director. In addition to the President and General Director, and the Creative Advisor to the President, the position collaborates extensively with the Production Director to plan and execute annual performance seasons in accordance with the company’s standard of musical and dramatic quality as well as its diversity charter. Additionally, the position facilitates long-range artistic strategy in line with the company’s mission and vision. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Demonstrate leadership of a dynamic artistic team, supervising all business functions of the artistic department, guided by the company’s mission, vision, and values
•Provide casting, contracting and production planning leadership in support of the company’s performances, artistic events, and external partnerships
•Create, execute, and monitor budgets for annual seasons, capital expenditures, co-productions, and new works
•Work collaboratively across departments to ensure the company’s artistic and fiscal ongoing success

KEY RELATIONSHIPS
Internal
•Frequent interaction with President and General Director, Production Director
•Regular interaction with Leadership Team colleagues across all departments
•Regular interaction and management of Artistic Team Staff Members
•Regular interaction with singers, conductors, and stage directors in season
•Regular interaction with composers and librettists in association with new works
•Intermittent interaction with Creative Advisor to the President
•Intermittent interaction with Board Members and the company’s community at large

External
•Regular interaction with artist managers, 
•Intermittent interaction with artistic administration of other opera companies and partner organizations

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
•Demonstrated lifelong learner with demonstrated cross-disciplinary interest in a wide variety of artistic endeavors 
•More than 5 years of artistic administrative experience with 3+ years of managerial experience within an arts organization.  Artist management experience is a suitable alternative.
•Advanced knowledge of operatic repertoire, classical vocal training, and an understanding of the current inventory of working artists in the field 
•Excellent judgment and analytical abilities
•Significant experience in opera contract negotiations
•Working knowledge with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite of products
•Outstanding communication skills with the ability to collaborate with a variety of colleagues from performers to management
•Ability to work and think independently, a motivated self-starter who also works well in a larger team.

WORK CONDITIONS:
•Ability to oversee evening or weekend performances, rehearsals, and functions.
•Sitting for extended periods of time.
•Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other office equipment.
