Associate Production and Facilities Director

The Santa Fe Opera is a beautiful, open air theater located in the high desert outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.  This unique opportunity to join the production team is open to a highly qualified individual as described below.

 FUNCTION: In conjunction with the Production and Facilities Director, direct production and facilities planning and operations in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner. This is a full time, exempt position with competitive compensation and full benefits.




  • Lead all coproduction and production rental coordination, including, but not limited to: promoting productions amongst partner companies; contract negotiation; budget development and tracking; shipping; and coordination with outside companies.
  • Assist in analyzing designs to identify and resolve potential problems.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the production design and artistic goals to ensure proper operation and finish of all production elements.
  • Collaborate in all production planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination activities.
  • Assist designers, directors, and production staff in assessing priorities throughout the production process and keep them apprised of any problems, while offering constructive and appropriate solutions.
  • Attend and assist in leading production meetings and post-production evaluation sessions. Disseminate meeting information to relevant persons.
  • Ensure proper preparedness for all rehearsals, performances, and other production projects and activities.
  • Participate in and support staging and technical rehearsals as needed, assisting with communications and production planning among design team and production department.
  • Lead pre-performance safety walks, and attend and supervise performances in conjunction with the Production and Facilities Director.
  • Participate and lead all departments in appropriate safety procedures.



  • Assist in supervising and directing day-to-day facilities operations and maintenance projects.
  • Participate in and lead all SFO facilities staff, and outside contractors and vendors, in appropriate safety procedures.
  • Assist in budget analysis and tracking.
  • Attend all meetings regarding maintenance projects, capital projects, and other projects as directed, and assist in resolving problems and answering questions.
  • Represent the Opera with outside contractors, architects, engineers, and vendors associated with facilities and maintenance projects.
  • Assist in development, review, and implementation of all building design and construction documents for potential future facilities and capital campaign projects.
  • Assist in providing information and updates from the staff to facilities and construction teams, and vice versa. Develop and supervise schedules for projects.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring all facilities and potential future capital campaign activities leading to substantial completion of construction on budget, and on time or ahead of schedule.



  • Accept responsibility for other appropriate projects relating to The Santa Fe Opera.
  • Give support and show appreciation to the Board of Directors, Opera Guilds, patrons, and other volunteer organizations and supporters of The Santa Fe Opera.
  • Follow procedures and policies of The Santa Fe Opera as stated in the employee manual.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • A BA in Theatre or comparable professional experience in technical theatre production, preferably including: set and prop construction and rigging; lighting and video projection; sound reinforcement; and costuming.
  • Training in and understanding of safe practices for the theatre environment.
  • Training in and understanding of basic scenery, props, costumes, lighting, video projection, and sound designs and implementations.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to stay flexible and solution-oriented within fast-paced and ever-changing environments.
  • The ability to maintain and work within a budget.
  • Comprehensive skills in reading and interpreting design and build drawings.
  • Willingness and ability to work within rigorous and demanding time schedules, including morning, evening and weekend hours.
  • Willingness and ability to work with a variety of different personalities and skill levels.
  • Understanding of business operations, accounting, and bookkeeping practices.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word. Auto CAD is a plus.



This position involves moderate work with lifting or moving of up to 40 pounds occasionally, occasional climbing and work from ladders and standing for long periods of time . The position requires ability to use computer equipment, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate verbally and in written word. This position requires long hours and a flexible work schedule.
