The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for cultivating and soliciting a portfolio of Major Gifts donors and prospects, focusing on the coordination and development of new regional and international fundraising efforts, and managing benefits fulfillment and donor care for the Major Gifts team. S/he will develop relationships, write solicitation letters and other donor correspondence, and participate in departmental administrative functions as needed. S/he will be a strategic thinker who will focus on acquisition, including identifying new prospects and coordinating special projects as needed. S/he will have an eye for detail, excellent writing skills, and a pro-active attitude in seeking out new fundraising opportunities for the Met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned as needed)

  • Develop and administer regional fundraising programs, including serving as the front-line development officer in meeting, cultivating, and soliciting new prospects, with a focus on donors with the capacity to give $25,000+ annually.
  • Coordinate and support international prospecting and development efforts.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of current Major Gifts and Patron donors, provide excellent patron service, and cultivate and solicit strategically with an emphasis on upgrades.
  • Manage Major Gifts benefit fulfillment, such as Dedication Evenings, and support donor care efforts such as priority ticketing.
  • Develop prospects and make strategic acquisition recommendations for annual gifts and special projects by partnering with other staff members in Major Gifts, Patron Giving, and Research; utilizing the database to create reports and analysis; etc.
  • Manage special solicitation efforts as needed, including creating well-written materials, tracking progress, and producing detailed reports.
  • Work with Board volunteers as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • BA degree.
  • 5-6 years experience in fundraising with an emphasis on individual solicitation.
  • Ability to write clearly and elegantly with an expert grasp of language, grammar and punctuation.
  • Experience writing original development documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent computer program/database skills. Familiarity with Tessitura is a plus.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment working with high-level donors, volunteers and Board members.
  • Familiarity with the performing arts, particularly opera, is a plus.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Ability to work well with all personality types.
  • Available for travel, plus evening and weekend work.
  • Ability to multi-task.
