SUMMARY

The Junior Draper/Tailor interprets original costume designs and creates custom patterning for costume construction in the world-class Houston Grand Opera Costume Shop.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work closely with the Head of Costumes, Costume Shop Supervisor, and designers to create accurate patterns for all builds.

• Work closely with the Costume Shop Supervisor and Head Draper on all facets of the construction process, as well as alterations, fittings, and maintenance of pulled or rented clothing items.

• With the Costume Shop Supervisor and Head Draper, delegate to and instruct First Hands and Costume Technicians on the accurate construction of costumes.

• With the Costume Shop Supervisor, calculate yardage estimates and other materials needed for each costume build, alteration, and for stock.

• Assist the Head of Costumes and Costume Shop Supervisor on departmental projects as required.

 

OTHER DUTIES: This job description represents the essential functions of the position, but is not all inclusive. Additional duties reasonably related to the position may be assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Specialized training and/or minimum of 3-5 years of experience with tailoring, altering and original pattern creation.

• Minimum of 3-5 years of professional sewing experience in a large-scale costume or fashion shop, with experience operating industrial sewing machines.

• Proven knowledge of textiles and costume and/or fashion history.

• Proven ability to organize, prioritize and maintain multiple projects at once and sustain productivity under pressure.

• Must be able to interact effectively and professionally with artists, management, staff, and vendors.

• Degree in costume technology/production preferred.

• Must be able to work while standing for long periods of time.

• Must be able to lift 30 lbs. to waist level

• Must be able to hang costumes on racks at 6’6”

• Schedule flexibility around fittings/rehearsal schedules required.

 

SPECIAL JOB CHARACTERISTICS:

Candidate should be highly motivated, independent self-starter with ability to work productively within a brisk day-to-day pace. Must be able to pay extremely close attention to detail and to maintain the integrity of the costume designs while creating patterns.
