SUMMARY

As a Development Officer at Houston Grand Opera, you will join an energetic, high-performing Development team, passionate about securing the future of opera through the generosity of our donors. This position will have a primary-focus on (1) the renewal and retention of a portfolio of 150-200 current annual donors contributing between $1,000 and $10,000 each season and (2) the management and execution of HGO’s Direct Response fundraising program, including two annual campaigns, monthly renewals, donor collateral, and a quarterly donor newsletter. This position requires someone who is personable, energetic, motivated, hard-working, disciplined, and team-oriented. Candidates must possess excellent writing and project management skills, be comfortable soliciting for money, masterful in building personal relationships, and highly organized.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

• Cultivate, solicit, and steward an assigned renewal portfolio of 150-200 donors, regularly re-qualifying for upgrade potential, and if found, working with fellow gift officers to obtain increases in annual support

• Maintain detailed and up-to-date records of all donor activity through Tessitura, HGO’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM), using Plans and Donor Information Sheets

• Create and implement a detailed Direct Response plan, inclusive of timetable, budget, and campaign performance metrics. The Development department’s Direct Response program consists of direct mail, e-mail, web-based, social media, and telefunding campaigns, across acquisition, renewal, and upgrade strategies

• Manage the creation of Individual Giving Team donor collateral for all giving levels, including benefits listings, brochures, and Inside the Circle, HGO’s donor e-newsletter

• Assist the Development team in staffing special events and performances, as required

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least three years of non-profit fundraising experience required. Proven success in face-to-face solicitations and relationship building. Knowledge of principles of fund raising and sales techniques. Experience with Microsoft Office and relevant fundraising software, preferably Tessitura.

SPECIAL JOB CHARACTERISTICS:

This position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including excellent listening skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Evening and weekend work hours required. Enthusiastic belief in the mission of Houston Grand Opera. While a specific knowledge of opera is desired, active curiosity and an eagerness to learn about this magical art form can be sufficient.
