Professional Company Membership

Professional Company Membership is OPERA America’s highest level of membership, reserved for those companies that maintain a dedication to professionalism and financial accountability in their production and presentation of opera and music theater.

Professional Company Members (PCMs) enjoy the most comprehensive portfolio of services and benefits, including:
  • Opportunities to participate in network-specific professional development at forums, conferences and special convenings.
  • Opportunities to apply for $2 million in annual grants for repertoire development, civic engagement and innovation.
  • Access to resources for advocacy and issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in opera.
  • Access to research and information resources, including databases of rentable productions, new American works and performance schedules.
  • Resources for supporting staff and trustees in areas of fundraising, marketing, governance, human resources and arts education.
  • Opportunities to promote productions and programs to national audiences.
  • Priority access and savings at the National Opera Center.

PCM Eligibility and Requirements
Professional Company Membership is the only membership type that requires approval of the OPERA America Board of Directors. To qualify as a Professional Company Member, a company must:

1. Be a 501(c)3 corporation or part of a larger 501(c)3 corporation whose repertoire includes opera and/or music theater.
2. Produce or perform at least one staged or semi-staged work in the current season, as well as in the two previous seasons.
3. Employ paid management of at least one full-time equivalent.
4. Engage and pay professional performers and other artists.
5. Provide audited financial statements, a financial review or an IRS Form 990.

Professional Company Members pay annual dues on a sliding scale based on the companies’ expense totals from the previous fiscal year. They must also complete the annual Professional Opera Survey of financial and operational activity to remain in good standing and be able to apply for grants.

New Professional Company Members receive two complimentary registrations to the annual Opera Conference to use within their first two years of membership. They must also remain in good standing for one full year before being eligible to apply for grants.

Companies that are not currently eligible for Professional Company Membership are invited to join OPERA America as Associate Members.

Applications are reviewed in fall, winter and spring of each year.

The full benefits of Professional Company Membership are outlined in a downloadable Manual and companion Quick Guides, which are condensed listings of resources available to staff and trustees in each of the major professional networks (e.g., marketing and PR, development, education, etc.).

All OPERA America facilities are handicapped accessible. The National Opera Center features ground-level entry with elevators to the venue. All spaces are wheelchair accessible, and modular seating can be arranged to accommodate wheelchair users for all programs and performances. Handicapped accessible restrooms are available on all floors.
