Milliner


DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a highly skilled and imaginative milliner to join our costume department on a per diem basis. The ideal candidate will bring exceptional craftsmanship, a keen eye for detail, and a deep understanding of period and contemporary headwear to support our productions. The milliner reports directly to the Crafts Head of Department, with additional oversight from the Head of the Costume Shop.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Crafting hats and headpieces for a wide range of stage costumes

  • Translating costume designers’ concepts into finished pieces under guidance for our new productions.

  • Repair and maintenance of hats from our extensive repertory stock, ensuring they remain in excellent condition for ongoing and future productions.

  • Working with both traditional and innovative materials at a high level of craftsmanship

  • Delivering work that meets artistic and stylistic requirements within production deadlines

  • Performing other related duties as assigned, such as:

  • Create headwear and facilitate alterations on existing headwear for principals’ artists, chorus, ballet, and actors.

  • Assess and assign changeover headwear for existing productions

  • Create prototypes and mockups as necessary for upcoming productions

  • Create hours estimated for upcoming millinery projects and manage workload to ensure projects can be completed within estimated and approved time.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Trained as a milliner

  • Ideally, experience in a costume workshop within a theatre or stage production setting

  • Basic knowledge of costume history

  • Creativity and a passion for experimentation

  • Ability to work independently as well collaboratively

  • Sensitivity to artistic processes and strong team spirit

$30 - $36 an hour

Compensation is provided in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
