Head of Music
DESCRIPTION
Opera Memphis seeks a Head of Music to join our team. The Head of Music is the primary partner to the General Director in setting the musical direction and values of the company. They are responsible for the oversight and musical preparation for all of the company’s public programming, including mainstage productions, community performances, special events, partner performances, and concerts. They are responsible for all musical components of the Handorf Company Artist (HCA) program. The Head of Music ensures all musical aspects of each performance are as successful as possible, within the artistic and financial parameters provided.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The ideal candidate is musically omnivorous, civic-minded, collaborative, and thrives in a fast-paced, supportive small-staff environment. They have a broad knowledge of standard rep and some experience with new American works. They relish working with emerging artists. They are curious about the world, passionate about the value of opera in 21st-century America, and interested in exploring connections and collaborations across genres, from dance to Rap to metalsmithing.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Realize the artistic and musical initiatives of the company, ensuring the artistic and music areas have the resources they require for a successful season.
- Work closely with the General Director on the creation, artistic planning, and programming development of mainstage season, community engagement initiatives, and HCA programs.
- Serve as principal coach for the Handorf Company Artists and any visiting artists, as needed.
- Oversee musical preparation for all public-facing programs.
- Prepare adult and children’s chorus, when applicable.
- Serve as rehearsal pianist for all mainstage programs.
- Manage all issues related to music or musical preparation. (e.g. researching royalties or editions, licensing, and managing parts rentals)
- Act as principal liaison with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and any other collaborating organizations.
- Act as repetiteur/pianist for public performances, special events, and community programming events, or engage substitutes when needed.
- Develop programs for 30 Days of Opera for HCAs and local singers.
- Maintain existing and develop new relationships with other Memphis musicians and music organizations.
- Represent Opera Memphis at performances and industry events, both locally and nationally.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree preferred; preferably in music, collaborative piano, or equivalent.
- Experience working in a nonprofit arts organization is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a performing arts environment and to deal proactively with company requirements.
- 5+ years of experience in collaborative piano, conducting, and/or music administration.
- Demonstrated success in professional environment of opera coaching and arts administration.
- Extensive musical and operatic knowledge.
- Multiple language ability is desirable, working knowledge of English, French, Italian, and German diction.
- Strong computer skills, including a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Office Suite. Familiarity with music creation/editing software is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Highly self-motivated with leadership qualities and an effective team player.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Reliable transportation is required.
SALARY RANGE: 5100 - 5400
Desired Start Date: August 3, 2026
BENEFITS
Pay Range: $5,100 - $5,400 Monthly
- This is a 9-month recurring position, generally running August 15-May 15, with some flexibility to pursue other work during the season, or to adjust those dates for summer work.
- Benefits include full medical, dental, and vision benefits, IRA matching, and a generous vacation policy. (Insurance is covered for the full year, not just the 9 months in Memphis.)
