What should be a summer of recovery and anticipation of the opera year ahead has become a season of watchfulness as we witness extended debate over the federal government’s role in funding the arts. Will the cultural agencies continue to exist? Will the tax benefits that encourage individual philanthropy be increased or reduced? These existential questions are not normal fare for visits to the beach or backyard barbeques.
