Meet the Composer: Mary D. Watkins
Meet Mary D. Watkins, a 2020 Discovery Grant recipient from the Opera Grants for Female Composers program. Her upcoming work Dark River: The Fannie Lou Hamer Story is an opera in two acts about voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, the granddaughter of slaves and daughter of sharecroppers who was one of the first Black Americans to register to vote in Mississippi.
