Arriving at the Fire - Opera Labs from Calgary Opera

Arriving at the Fire explores the "first day jitters" of seasoned artistic professionals creating their first opera. It is a compositional experiment pairing the inspiration of Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy and librettist Paula Wing.

Murphy is a well-established voice in the orchestra, choral and chamber music world. Wing is a playwright fixture of the Canadian theatre scene. Together, they are tackling the operatic format to find out for themselves if their gifts translate into compelling operatic storytelling.

With the working title of Arriving at the Fire, this Calgary Opera project is an excerpt developed for consideration of a full-length opera based on the story of a charismatic new-age spiritual guru who leads his disciples down a dangerous path.

Participants: Kelly Marie Murphy, Paula Wing, Jean-Claude Picard, Elizabeth Stepkowski Tarhan, Mark Morash, Mel Kirby, Jack Olszewski, Neil Craighead, Lillian Brooks, Kallie Clayton, Jeremy Dubé, Alanna Fraize, Scott Rumble, Jeffrey Strand, Eden Tremayne, Dominic Veilleux, James Bundy, Shelby-Jai Flick, and Marc Lavallée.

Lab Dates: February 8 - 28, 2021.

Film by Pluto Pictures; originally released on June 9, 2021.

About Opera Labs
Stemming from a desire to find more adaptive, scalable and sustainable processes to engage artists interested in the creation of new works, Calgary Opera created Opera Labs to provide a new framework for innovation.

Opera Labs nurtures innovative and collaborative opera projects from concept to curtain.

Following in the footsteps of past General Director and CEO Bob McPhee, who was a champion of new work, the goal of the program is to add bold, new creations from diverse voices to the international opera canon.

To invite people from around the world to witness the inspiring work happening behind the scenes of the program’s four inaugural projects, the company also released a short film series filmed and edited by Pluto Pictures that documents each project’s journey.
