Opera Conference 2023: The Human Stories

Opera tells human stories. Abundant new work and the creative retelling of the inherited repertoire increasingly align these stories with our own lived experiences and the lives of people around us. Numerous stories reveal the impact of sexism, racism, and struggles against adversity; however, many perspectives are still absent from the opera stage. What stories are being told and which are being neglected? Can the drama of opera be balanced with joy? How can opera represent the fullness, complexity, and diversity of the human experience?
