MASTER CARPENTER - JOB DESCRIPTION
The master carpenter, under the supervision of the technical director and reporting to the artistic director, is responsible for the construction, mounting, and rigging of all scenic elements for Opera Orlando’s full season which runs from August 2026 - May 2027. The master carpenter would provide these services as an independent contractor, not as an employee, partner, or agent of Opera Orlando. The master carpenter shall determine the method, details, and means of performing the work, while also supervising a crew of carpenters in the construction of scenery and scenic elements. The master carpenter serves as a key member of the load-in, set-up, strike, and restore team for each production / event. They also assist with the maintenance of the scene shop equipment and supplies as needed. Compensation will be a monthly fee paid out over the ten months of the term. Duties & Responsibilities:
Consults with the technical director and designer(s) to fully understand the scope, scale, and functionality of each build.
Consults with the technical director and implements the rules, regulations, safety procedures, and protocols to follow during the build.
Works in conjunction with, and oversees all overhire labor for each build, including but not limited to carpenters, welders, specialty craftsmen, and scenic artists.
Verifies that all projects are built in accordance with the drawings, and proactively consults with the Technical Director in case of any questions or when a decision needs to be made regarding the building/rebuilding of a set piece.
Assists the Technical Director in distribution of projects during the workday and over the build period.
Attends all introductory, preparatory, and follow-up meetings regarding scenery.
Attends weekly production check-ins.
Assists the production manager in managing the shop space and tools.
Verifies, at the end of each workday/production build, that tools and materials are properly stored away; and that the shop and theater (when on stage) are swept and clean.
Attends tech rehearsals and serves as run crew as appropriate and as needed.
Constructs special projects, as assigned.
Serves as a key member of the load-in, set-up, strike, and restore team for all Opera Orlando productions and events.

BENEFITS
Pay Range: $25,000 - $30,000 Monthly
The master carpenter would be a 1099 position paid $2,500 to $3,000 monthly from August through May.
