Production Stage Manager


DESCRIPTION

The Production Stage Manager (PSM) at The Dallas Opera plays a critical leadership role in the coordination and execution of all stage management duties related to mainstage productions. Reporting to the Administrator of Production, the PSM works closely with the Operations Department, as well as artists, creative teams, and other production staff to ensure consistent artistic quality, safe, efficient backstage operations, and smooth rehearsal and performance processes.

This position is a permanent, full-time annual role (non-exempt) and is offered in conjunction with additional seasonal contractual work as a Calling Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager as covered under the terms the collective bargaining agreement between The Dallas Opera and the American Guild of Musical Artists.

Responsibilities 

Specific duties include administration of stage management functions, including but not limited to:

  • Prepare and maintain clean, organized, and fully equipped rehearsal environments

  • Supervise and coordinate the stage management team, including training and oversight as required

  • Set standards and best practices for TDO’s stage management operations

  • Support the Operations Department in meeting the company’s artistic, technical, and operational goals

  • Serve as a communication liaison between artistic, production, and administrative departments, ensuring timely and accurate flow of information

  • Collaborate with the Company Manager in the development and maintenance of daily and production schedules in season

  • Recommend and assist in hiring for open staging staff positions as needed

  • Interpret and implement company policies, union agreements, and contractual obligations

  • Promote and model a positive approach to health and safety; ensure compliance with safe working practices and risk management protocols

  • Manage staging staff expenses and submit reconciliations in a timely manner to the Administrator of Production

  • Attend and actively participate in all operational and production meetings

  • Supervise and maintain detailed records of scenic presets, running documents, and other technical documents

  • Oversee the creation and accuracy cue sheets, running documents, and checklists for internal use and archival purposes

  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals at the Winspear Opera House

  • Read and interpret production drawings, ground plans, and technical documentation

  • Collaborate with the Technical Director to oversee the setup and readiness of stage and backstage areas

  • Maintain organized production files for all mainstage productions for internal and archival reference

  • Support long-range planning of the future opera seasons

  • Assist in assembling and updating rental materials for TDO productions

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Administrator of Production

In addition to leading the stage management team, the Production Stage Manager may be assigned to serve as Calling Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager on up to two mainstage productions per season. Duties include:

  • Serve as the central coordinator for opera rehearsals and performances, ensuring smooth communication and operations across departments

  • Supervise daily work of Assistant Stage Managers and Production Assistants as required

  • Prepare and distribute daily rehearsal and performance reports

  • Run all staging and technical rehearsals; maintain the rehearsal and performance schedule as set by the Assistant Director

  • Attend and participate in production meetings, bringing forward questions and concerns by department

  • Assist in coordinating production equipment moves between rehearsal venues and the Winspear Opera House

  • Finalize all stage management documentation for archival and future use

Qualifications 

  • Significant stage management experience in opera, theater, or related performing arts fields

  • Demonstrated understanding of the artistic process and strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to read music and accurately cue performers, orchestra, and technical departments

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, and organizational skills

  • Calm and adaptable under pressure; able to troubleshoot effectively in high-stress environments

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with cloud-based scheduling software (such as Propared) is a plus; training provided

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of artists, technicians, and administrators

  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and extended hours as needed during production periods

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds

Note: Salary is commensurate with experience and reflects a combination of full-time, permanent compensation and additional seasonal contractual work covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between The Dallas Opera and the American Guild of Musical Artists.

BENEFITS

Pay Range: $35,000 - $65,000 Annual
