Lighting Supervisor


DESCRIPTION

The Lighting Supervisor (LS) reports directly to the Technical Director (TD) and oversees all lighting activities in support of The Atlanta Opera's (TAO) mission. The LS actively manages lighting operations and provides administrative support for the Production Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties in addition to other duties as assigned.

  • Collaborate with Lighting Designers: Provide necessary information such as ground plans, inventory lists, and preliminary schedules for light plot and specifications.

  • Draft Lighting Plots: Create lighting plots that adhere to TAO standards.

  • Feasibility Advisement: Consult with the Technical Director (TD) and head electrician to assess the feasibility of designs, considering venue limitations, inventory, budget, schedule, and other special concerns.

  • Plan Electric Hang and Focus: Coordinate with the TD and head electrician to plan the electric hang, focus, and cueing.

  • Order Lighting Equipment: Procure lighting equipment, including rental gear, expendables, and special equipment.

  • Manage Electrics Budget: Oversee the electrics budget in coordination with the TD.

  • Supervise Lighting Installation: Work with the head electrician to supervise the hanging and installation of all lights and lighting equipment.

  • Oversee Focus: Supervise the focus of lighting equipment.

  • Attend Services: Be present at all services with the Lighting Designer.

  • Call Follow Spot Cues: Manage follow spot cues as necessary.

  • Monitor Performances: Attend all performances to ensure the preservation of the lighting design, taking notes and making adjustments for any issues.

  • Maintain Lighting Equipment: Coordinate with the head electrician to create and maintain all TAO lighting equipment, whether owned, rented, or borrowed.

  • Maintain Communication Equipment: Work with the TD and head electrician to maintain all communication equipment, such as clear-com headsets and two-way radios, and address additional requests from other departments.

  • Supervise A/V Technician: Coordinate with the TD and head electrician to supervise the audio/visual technician in the venue.

  • Provide Technical Support: Offer technical support for lighting at special events or functions.

  • Work Flexibly: Fulfill tasks and needs both in-person and remotely, as agreed with the TD.

  • Document Productions: Fully document all productions from development through performances, maintaining up-to-date documentation and video/photo records.

  • Manage TAO Infrastructure: Oversee the management of TAO infrastructure, including networking, power, and tech tables.

 

COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication abilities, along with excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Organizational Excellence: Highly organized with keen attention to detail.

  • Time Management: Capable of meeting deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently.

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Suite, and the ability to quickly learn new software programs.

  • Digital Drafting Expertise: Proficient in digital drafting using Vectorworks.

  • ETC Board Knowledge: Familiarity with ETC Board and dimming systems is beneficial but not required.

  • Opera Knowledge: Knowledge of or a strong interest in opera is preferred.

  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively within a production team and across multiple departments.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or a related field.

  • Professional Experience: At least five years of work experience in theatrical production, with a demonstrated track record of increased responsibility.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods (up to and over eight hours per day) and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively using a phone and headset.

  • Licensing: Valid driver’s license.

  • Safety Compliance: Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner.

  • Availability: The position requires evening and weekend commitments during the opera season.

 

Desired Start Date: July 7, 2025
