Visiting Faculty Vacancy in Opera Theater
DESCRIPTION
The Oberlin Conservatory invites applications for a full-time, visiting position in Opera Theater during the 2025-26 academic year.
The faculty vacancy will be for the entire 2025-26 academic year. We envision either appointing the successful candidate for the entirety of the 2025-26 academic year, or making separate appointments for each of Fall 2025 and Spring 2026.
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, jazz studies, composition, technology in music and related arts, recording arts and production, music theater, and musicology. Oberlin also offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in conducting, the Master of Music in performance on historical instruments, the Master of Fine Arts in piano technology, and artist diplomas.
Direct mainstage operas (L’amant anonyme by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges in the fall and Later the Same Evening and Bastianello by John Musto in the spring);
Teach opera workshop classes, in collaboration with a music director/pianist, and other opera courses as expertise and interest allow;
Oversee the opera budget, in collaboration with the conservatory business manager and the conservatory dean;
Coordinate the design process and all production personnel for mainstage operas, in collaboration with the theater department.
Qualifications:
Outstanding record of professional experience as an opera director;
Advanced degree in opera theater, theater, or equivalent experience;
Experience as a lyric theater director or equivalent performance experience; musical and linguistic expertise;
Practical knowledge of theater technology;
Experience teaching acting and/or movement to singers;
Demonstrated success in working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.

BENEFITS
Pay Range: $82,000 - $85,000 Annual
Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
