Assistant Music Librarian


DESCRIPTION

LA Opera is seeking an Assistant Music Librarian to provide critical support to the Music Librarian in the preparation of music and the smooth and effective operations of the Music Library.  

Examples of the Assistant Music Librarian’s key responsibilities include proofreading, binding, scanning, and distributing music scores, as well as maintaining the company’s inventory and circulation of scores, parts, and recordings. 

This is a part-time, overtime-eligible administrative staff position based out of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.  The anticipated range for the base hourly rate of pay is $25 to $30, and the regular schedule is anticipated to be approximately 29 hours/week.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Maintain the circulation of scores, recordings, and other library materials using library circulation software. 

  • Assist in the preparation of musical materials, including proofreading, applying cuts, rehearsal numbers, string bowings, and other performance markings. 

  • Manage the aria collection filing system and maintain associated databases. 

  • Prepare and process materials by scanning, photocopying, binding, and creating transpositions or inserts as needed. 

  • Provide on-site support during rehearsals and performances, including last-minute adjustments to materials. 

  • Serve as a point of contact for library users, including staff, orchestra, chorus, guest artists, and Young Artists. 

  • Perform additional administrative duties to support the smooth operation of the Music Library. 

Who We’re Looking For 

We’re seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented team member who thrives in a fast-paced musical environment and is passionate about supporting the artists and employees responsible for the company’s musical excellence. Ideal candidates will have: 

  • A degree in music or equivalent work experience. 

  • Familiarity with operatic and orchestral repertoire. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with music notation software such as Sibelius or Finale and Photoshop preferred. 

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. 

  • The ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt to changing priorities. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • High emotional intelligence and discretion, particularly when handling sensitive materials and interacting with artists. 

  • Physical ability to lift and transport materials up to 50 pounds. 

  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
