Tania León

Composer, conduc­tor, and educator Tania León, who wrote the 1994 opera Scourge of Hyacinths, was named by the Kennedy Center as one of the five recipients of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. The honorees will be celebrated at a December 4 gala.

Soprano Aundi Marie Moore and composer Joel Thompson each received 2023 Sphinx Med­als of Excellence, the highest honor given by the Sphinx Orga­nization. The awards, which include $50,000 career grants, recognize extraordinary classi­cal Black and Latinx musicians.

Angela Brown

The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts bestowed its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award on soprano Angela Brown for her outstanding stage career and commitment to diversity among role models, performers, educators, and audiences in the arts.

Raymond Menard

Raymond Menard, production stage manager at the Metropolitan Opera and president of AGMA, has received the Stage Managers’ Association’s 2022 Del Hughes Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Art of Stage Management. Menard has served on the Met’s stage management team since 1987 and before that worked as a stage director at New York City Opera for nearly a decade.

Erie Mills

The American Prize, a nonprofit organi­zation that recog­nizes excellence in classical music, named soprano Erie Mills, artistic director of Livermore Valley Opera, as its 2022 Distinguished Artist. The award recognizes Mills’ sustained artistic excellence over the course of an exceptional career.

At this year’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards, which honor the per­forming arts in Toronto, Tapestry Opera won six awards for its world premiere of R.U.R. A Torrent of Light, by Nicole Lizée and Nicolas Billon.
