A Framework for Change

The eight points of the Black Opera Alliance’s “Pledge for Racial Equity and Systemic Change in Opera” address equity across multiple levels: casting, repertoire (with an emphasis on works by Black composers), hiring practices, board composition, even makeup. The pledge also calls for companies to “review the board’s recruitment culture and decision-making methodologies for inherent racism and/or implicit bias” and hire equity consultants to conduct internal reviews of equity, diversity, and inclusivity in the workplace.
